Rodelta’s alignment with United Nations goals
The 17 United Nations goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs) are the framework for the global effort within sustainable development. The goals recognise that social, economic, and environmental development are intrinsically linked and that it requires a common, global effort to achieve lasting results. We are aware of our co- responsibility. SDGs are relevant to our business model but we also work with other goals either strategically or economically. Our contribution as Rodelta Pumps International towards the SDG is described below.
Our product portfolio within the Rodelta business unit is a direct extension of UN SDG 6, which aims to ensure access to clean water and sanitation facilities, as well as sustainable management of these resources. Our pump solutions help ensure clean drinking water in both new and established water supply systems, as they are reliable, durable, and efficient, thereby contributing to stable water management at an affordable price.
Our products are integral in handling surface water. Rodelta products and solutions are applied to various processes that aim to ensure responsible surface water management and avoid risks to the environment and health. For example, Rodelta pumps provide solutions for drinking water intake stations and distribution.
The ninth Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations focuses on promoting sustainable and resilient infrastructure, as well as the development of sustainable industries and investments in scientific research and innovation. Rodelta, as a company involved in designing and manufacturing advanced pump products, contributes to this goal through its own research and development department (R&D). In this department, new and improved hydraulic pump designs are developed, research is conducted regarding new production methods and materials are verified for suitability with the application. An example is the use of geopolymer concrete in its concrete volute pumps (CVP) series. The energy-intensive cement production process is not necessary in this case, which results in extremely low CO2 footprint for this concrete.
Rodelta pumps have a significant impact on health and quality of life. As we are active in the drinking water industry, we indirectly contribute to UN SDG 3, which focuses on health and well-being. Water-related diseases are a major problem worldwide, and clean drinking water will greatly improve UN SDG 3.
Rodelta’s product portfolio contributes to clean water and sanitation, which forms the basis for more sustainable cities and local communities. Rodelta pumps for flood prevention and drainage control help cities adapt to extreme rainfall and changing climates Thereby supporting SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities.
SDG 12 of the UN focuses on promoting responsible consumption and production practices, which we support at Rodelta by looking at innovative methods in our processes, such as reusing castings in our products (refurbishing). We also support the recycling of materials. All waste materials from our machining department are recycled, but also oils, grease, plastic, and paper are offered for recycling. This recycling is done to reduce waste and preserve natural resources.
SDG 13 of the UN aims to combat climate change by reducing global temperatures and promoting resilience and adaptation to its impact. As a player in the pump industry, Rodelta contributes to this goal by recognizing the interdependence between water consumption and energy use. Therefore, we facilitate pump solutions that are optimally designed with respect to the customer’s Best Efficiency Point (BEP) by means of our diffuser technology. This minimizes the energy required to pump the specified amount of water. However, at Rodelta, we go even further by considering factors such as pipe losses, etc. This is weighed in a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis and is reflected in a solid advice to the customer.
Rodelta produces pump solutions that enhance society’s ability to adapt to climate-related hazards, including potential impacts associated with rising sea levels or more frequent and/or severe weather conditions due to drought. As a production facility, we also pay attention to the so-called “low-hanging fruit”. For example, the entire Rodelta building is illuminated by LED lighting. We use electric forklifts and offer our customers the possibility of charging their electric cars. Additionally, we encourage our employees to use bicycles and support them by providing an attractive bicycle purchase scheme.
SDG 14 of the UN focuses on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. At Rodelta, we have a close connection between SDG 14 and SDG 13, where we describe our ability to provide large-scale customized pump solutions for water management projects, including fish-friendly pump solutions. The pump hydraulics are designed in such a way that the survival rate in terms of fish passage is increased. Rodelta employees were even closely involved in the development of the NEN 8775, which is the fish safety standard that discribes the method for determining the fish safety of pumps, screw pumps, and closed water turbines.
Peace, justice and strong institutions SDG 16. At Rodelta, our business practices are supervised by our Code of Conduct, which obliges all employees and directors to behave ethically and socially responsibly. We maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and bribery in all forms. We expect our supply chain to maintain the same high level of ethical and socially responsible behavior as we do. At Rodelta, forced labor, child labor, and human rights violations are prohibited, and we contractually reserve the right to terminate any supply chain contract if there is a violation of any of the topics described in our Code of Conduct
SDG 4 aims for equal access to quality education and promotion of lifelong learning for all people. As a pump company, Rodelta modestly contributes to this goal through its freely accessible Rodelta University web page, which provides a lot of information about pumps. In addition, Rodelta provides guest lectures on fluid mechanics and pumps at the University of Twente. Furthermore, the company offers TCO training and pump courses to customers to provide them with pump knowledge to make well-informed choices regarding their pump purchases.
